Echo Beach Bali Guide 2026: Surf, Eat, Stay | Easy Day

Echo Beach Canggu at sunset with surfers in the lineup and beach bars on the sand

Echo Beach sits at the western edge of Canggu, past Batu Bolong, where the rice fields run almost to the sand. The reef break offshore draws surfers at first light. By sunset the beach bars fill with people watching the same sky.

It's quieter than Batu Bolong, more raw than Berawa, and one of the last stretches of Canggu coast that still feels half-rural. This Echo Beach Bali guide covers where it actually is, what the surf is like, where to eat, where to stay, and how it compares to the neighbours.

Where Is Echo Beach Exactly?

The official name is Pantai Batu Mejan. Locally, everyone calls it Echo Beach.

It sits in Canggu, in the Kuta Utara district of Badung regency, roughly 15 minutes west of Batu Bolong by motorbike. The beach is bordered by rice fields to the north, Pererenan to the west, and Pantai Berawa to the east. The main access road is Jl. Pantai Batu Mejan, ending at the beachfront where the bars cluster.

For more on the neighbourhood and our delivery coverage, see our Echo Beach area page.

What's the Surf Like at Echo Beach?

Echo Beach is a reef break offshore, not a beach break. Best for intermediate to advanced surfers, especially shortboarders. The best swell runs April to October during the dry season, with a south swell and low tide producing the cleanest faces.

There are three peaks. Echo Beach right is the main wave. Echo Lefts is the dedicated left, with a shorter, faster ride. A shifty middle peak sits between them and depends on the day.

Crowds gather at dawn and again in the hour before sunset. Midday is sun and less wind, with fewer people in the lineup.

If you're learning, head to Batu Bolong instead. Echo is too rocky and the wave too punchy for first lessons. The reef is exposed at low tide and unforgiving when you fall.

Where to Eat and Drink at Echo Beach

The Echo Beach eat-and-drink lineup has shifted over the last two years. Some old favourites closed. A handful of newer spots took their place. The strip is still smaller than Batu Bolong, but the quality has held.

Warung options inland on Jl. Batu Mejan run under Rp 50,000 for a full plate. Nasi campur, mie goreng, sate. Quieter than the strip and more honest about pricing.

Where to Stay Around Echo Beach

Most accommodation is villas and small boutique hotels, not big resorts. Echo doesn't have the chain hotel build-out you'll find further south.

Villa rental ranges from Rp 1,500,000 to Rp 6,000,000 per night depending on size, pool, and proximity to the sand. Larger family villas push past that range.

The anchor boutique hotel on the strip is COMO Uma Canggu, with a handful of smaller properties tucked off Jl. Pantai Batu Mejan.

Most shorter stays mix it up by area. Berawa for restaurants, Batu Bolong for nightlife, Echo for quiet mornings. Long-term renters can find monthly villas inland from Rp 18,000,000 to Rp 35,000,000 depending on size and condition.

For comparison with the neighbouring area, see our Berawa guide.

Practical Info: Getting Around and What to Pack

Motorbike rental is the default. Expect Rp 70,000 to Rp 90,000 per day with helmet included. Two operators that locals and long-stayers consistently recommend:

Gojek and Grab car pickups work in this area, but the narrow roads slow things down at peak hours. Walking from Echo to Batu Bolong takes 35 to 45 minutes along the beach at low tide.

Pack for the conditions:

  • Reef booties for the rocky entry
  • Surf wax matched to warm tropical water
  • Strong reef-safe sunscreen, not the regular stuff that ends up on the reef

ATMs and minimarts sit at the main entrance. The closest pharmacy is back toward Batu Bolong on Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong.

Echo Beach vs Batu Bolong vs Berawa: How to Choose

Three areas, three personalities.

Batu Bolong is central Canggu with beginner-friendly surf, the busiest cafe and bar scene, and the easiest layout to walk. It's where everyone starts.

Berawa is trendier and more built up. More restaurants, more gym culture, further from the surf if you're a surfer. The digital nomad density runs higher.

Echo Beach is quieter and more raw. Better surf if you can handle a reef. Fewer cafes per square kilometre, more sky.

Day-trippers from Seminyak tend to hit Echo for sunset and La Brisa. Long-stay surfers settle Echo. Long-stay creatives often choose Berawa or Batu Bolong instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not really. Echo Beach is a reef break with sharp, exposed reef at low tide and faster, punchier waves better suited to shortboarders and experienced surfers. Beginners should start at Batu Bolong instead, also a reef break, but with sandy patches and the long, slow, forgiving rides that Canggu surf schools build their lessons around.
Batu Bolong is busier, more central, and easier for beginners, with a denser cafe and bar scene. Echo is quieter, more raw, with better surf for intermediates and a slower cafe scene. Most people end up sampling both before settling on one as their base.
From Batu Bolong, it's a 15-minute motorbike ride west on Jl. Pantai Batu Mejan. From Seminyak, allow 30 to 45 minutes by car depending on traffic through Berawa. Gojek and Grab cars work, but the narrow lanes slow things down at peak hours.
