Batu Bolong Guide: Eat, Surf, Work, Live in Canggu (2026)

Batu Bolong is the strip everyone pictures when they think of Canggu. Surf shops, smoothie bowls, motorbike traffic that doesn't move for ten minutes at sunset.
This Batu Bolong guide covers the essentials, from food to accommodation to daily logistics. It's the version we wish someone had handed us before our first month here. Where to eat, surf, work, and stay, plus the practical stuff no one tells you before you move in.
Where Is Batu Bolong in Canggu?
Jalan Pantai Batu Bolong runs from the main Canggu shortcut road down to the beach. The strip borders Berawa to the east and Nelayan to the west. It's the most central and busiest part of Canggu, with everything inside walking distance: the beach, the cafes, the shops.
For laundry context, Easy Day Laundry's Canggu shop sits 1.5km up the road in Tibubeneng, close to Atlas Beach Club and Finn's Beach Club. Pickup and delivery covers the entire Batu Bolong area daily.
For more on this area and our coverage, see our Batu Bolong area page.
What Is Batu Bolong Known For?
Five things, mostly.
A beginner-friendly surf break at the beach. A semi-reef, sand-bottomed wave that breaks in both directions. Forgiving for beginners, fun for longboarders.
A dense cafe and dinner scene that's shifted noticeably upmarket in the last two years. Coffee in the morning, brunch through midday, and a serious restaurant lineup after dark.
The sunset strip. Beachfront bars at the end of Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong fill up every evening. Old Man's and The Lawn anchor the scene, with smaller warungs spilling onto the sand.
Boutique shopping. Surf shops, swimwear, homeware, plant-based skincare, and the kind of clothing stores that catch your eye on the way to dinner.
The vibe. It's the centre of Canggu in terms of foot traffic, social energy, and how loud it gets after dark. Some people love it. Some move to Pererenan after a month.

Where to Stay in Batu Bolong
Three brackets, depending on how long you're here.
Short-stay (tourists): Guesthouses from $30 a night, boutique hotels at $60 to 150. Plenty of options on Booking and Airbnb within walking distance of the beach.
Medium-stay (1-3 months): Private rooms in shared villas run Rp 5 to 8 million per month. Most are on side streets one or two turns off the main strip.
Long-stay (3+ months): Private villas from Rp 8 to 15 million per month. Fewer options directly on Jl. Batu Bolong itself. Most sit on the gangs (small lanes) running off the strip.
The trade-off is honest. Batu Bolong is noisy and busy. Great for energy, less great for quiet focus work. If you want a calmer base, look at side streets off the strip or shift to neighbouring Nelayan or Pererenan.
Living in Batu Bolong: The Practical Stuff
A few things that catch new arrivals off guard.
Traffic. Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong becomes one-way during peak hours, which catches every visitor at least once. Plan your motorbike route accordingly.
Groceries. Mini-marts and local shops line the main strip for daily basics. For bigger shops with fresh produce and Western brands, head to Tibubeneng or Berawa.
Laundry. Easy Day Laundry's Canggu shop is 1.5km from Batu Bolong, with daily pickup and delivery at a flat Rp 35,000 round trip. Standard wash, dry, iron and fold is Rp 40,000 for 0-3kg, with 24-hour standard turnaround and 5-hour express options.
ATMs and money changers. Plenty along the main road. Use the ones inside reputable shops or cafes rather than freestanding machines on the street.
Noise. Live music from bars can run until midnight, especially on weekends. If you sleep light, check your accommodation's distance from Old Man's before booking.
For other nearby areas, see our pages on Berawa and Tibubeneng.
Is Batu Bolong Right for You?
Best for: surfers, social travellers, people who want to be in the middle of things, and first-timers in Canggu who want everything walking-distance.
Less ideal for: remote workers needing quiet, families with young children (traffic is no joke), and budget travellers (prices are Canggu's highest).
Alternatives within ten minutes: Berawa for beach clubs and newer villas, Pererenan for quiet, Tibubeneng for local pricing.
